173 pictures are far heavier than they need to be
Why it matters
Almost every photograph on the site was uploaded straight from the camera, at half a megabyte to nearly two each. A visitor downloads every one of them at that size — including anyone opening the site on a phone — and it is the single biggest thing slowing the site down. Google counts page speed when it decides where to rank you.
It is visible today. On the 2025 photo gallery our browser check found 18 of the 46 photographs still blank after the page had finished loading — the files are fine, they are simply too heavy to arrive in time. The Итоги 2025 page carries 23 MB of pictures and the homepage 15 MB, which on a phone is ten to twenty seconds before the page settles.
Resize before uploading: photographs to about 1,600 pixels on the long side, portraits and logos to 800, saved as JPEG at around 80% quality (or WebP). Aim for under 200 kB for a photograph and under 100 kB for a portrait. Replace media in the Media Library swaps the file in place, so the smaller version appears everywhere the old one was used without re-linking anything.
Where to change it

Start with the gallery, Итоги 2025 and the homepage. Between them those three pages hold 100 of the 173 heavy pictures and 76 MB of the 101. On the homepage the three to do first are 7_aabd1aee5c.jpg (1.44 MB), Arnest_Yunirus_2724fcf7f2.jpg (1.28 MB) and AVO_05646_c314997ab5.jpg (1.05 MB); the hotel photo hayatt1_67cf829d2e.png is a 631 kB PNG that would be a fraction of that as a JPEG.
The speaker portraits are one pattern, not 89 problems. Nearly every speaker portrait is a PNG of 250–900 kB, displayed at a fraction of its size. Saved at 800 pixels as JPEG each one lands well under 100 kB. The portrait appears on the speaker’s own page and again on the homepage carousel, so every re-upload improves both.
Where the number comes from. We weighed every image on all 136 pages on 24 August: 202 distinct pictures, 173 of them above 100 kB, 101 MB between them. Each picture is counted once, at the size it was uploaded, however many pages it appears on. One of the 173 is the site logo, which we are shrinking ourselves.
